Guest Brew at Shipyard Emporium in Winter Park, Florida

Last month, University of Central Florida, Rosen College of Hospitality Management Beer class’ Professor Edmund F. Measom III won Best of Show at the Sunshine Challenge beer competition. His brew was chosen as the best out of 600 beers.

As one of his rewards, Professor Measom brewed his winning recipe with Ron Raike, Brewmaster at the Shipyard Emporium last week. The Shipyard Emporium is Florida’s first nano-brewery and is located in Winter Park, Florida.

The name of the brew is Mr. Ed's Baltic Porter. That's the name David Doble, Brewmaster of Tampa Bay Brewing Co. gave to Professor Measom’s beer when they (Dave and Ed) first brewed it in 2007 as a prize for Professor Measom’s winning Best of Show in the Best Florida Beer Competition.

Ron Raike is also a Guest Speaker in Professor Measom’s Quality Brewing and Fine Beer – HFT4864 class. He presents twice a semester on the Belgian beer styles to help the students learn to become a certified Cicerone. In the Fall 2011 semester over 90% of the students passed the exam and received this lifetime certification. Cheers!

Shipyard Brewing Company’s New Beer Coming Soon: Shipyard Applehead

PORTLAND, MAINE (November 30, 2011) – Shipyard Brewing Company announces the release of a new beer: Shipyard Applehead. An extension of the company’s popular Shipyard Pumpkinhead line, Shipyard Applehead is a seasonal brew available December through March, while supplies last.

“We asked Pumpkinhead fans what other flavors would they like to see and their answer was apple,” said director of sales and marketing, Bruce Forsley. “We listened to what our fans asked for and created Shipyard Applehead. Master brewer Alan Pugsley has combined the subtle sweetness of cinnamon and apple with a clean, refreshing wheat ale to create a whole new beer experience.”

In mid-December, a complete list of states this beer will be available in, including distributor contact information, will be posted on Shipyard’s website, Facebook and Twitter pages.

Shipyard Applehead will be available first in New England and other markets across the United States will follow in January and February.

This week, Applehead will be on tap at pubs in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Later this month, fans in those states will also be able to find this beer on store shelves.

Other New England states will have this product on draft at select locations starting next week.

In Maine, Shipyard Prelude Special Ale, the company’s award-winning winter seasonal, is available now and Shipyard Applehead will hit the market after the new year.

Shipyard Brewing Company Extends the Season for Pumpkinhead Ale

PORTLAND, MAINE (August 31, 2011) – To keep up with an unprecedented consumer demand for this fall favorite, Shipyard Brewing Company is extending the season for Shipyard Pumpkinhead Ale through November.

“We usually stop brewing Pumpkinhead around Halloween,” said Master Brewer Alan Pugsley. “This year, we began brewing it a bit earlier and will end after Thanksgiving.”

Based on last year’s growth, the brewery prepared for this year’s production by expanding its brewing capacity to 10,000 additional cases per week.

President Fred Forsley noted that “Even with this expansion and operating the brewery at full capacity since July 1st, distributors are finding it difficult to keep up with the demand for Pumpkinhead. The brew house crew is literally working around the clock to fill the pipeline.”

That pipeline also includes Shipyard’s full line of year-round beers, which sales are on the rise for as well. In the first half of this year, brewery sales grew by 25% over the same period in 2010.

“We’re responding directly to consumer requests,” continued Forsley. “Pumpkinhead pairs well with fall foods and traditional Thanksgiving fare. And, over the years we’ve learned that people stock up on this beer for the winter. Adding an additional month of production gives people extra time to stock up.”

Customers can request local retailers and on-premise accounts to bring in Pumpkinhead while supplies last. Distributors will be able to order this product from Shipyard through the end of November. Shipyard Pumpkinhead Ale is currently available in 34 states, including: AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, FL, GA, IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, NE, NH, NJ, NV, NY, OH, OK, PA, RI, SC, TN, VA, VT, and WA.

PORTLAND - Shipyard Brewing Co. took delivery of new equipment Thursday as part of a $1 million expansion of its plant on Newbury Street.

The new equipment will enable the company to brew 180,000 barrels of beer yearly, up from its current capacity of 140,000 barrels, said Alan Pugsley, Shipyard's master brewer.

He said Shipyard has been running at full capacity recently and scrambling to fill orders.

"We were unable to make any more beer . . . and we were not achieving all our orders on a timely basis," he said.

The new equipment includes stainless- steel storage tanks and three fermentation tanks -- two that can hold 300 barrels of beer and one that can hold 100 barrels. A barrel holds 31 gallons.

The expansion, which will also include a new malt silo, is expected to be completed by Memorial Day.

Pugsley said the equipment will let Shipyard brew five batches of beer every day, up from four. The added capacity will help meet demand during the busy summer and fall months, when Shipyard brews its popular Summer Ale and Pumpkinhead Ale....

Pumpkinhead Pummels Old Thumper in the Championship Round

The Pumpkinhead phenomenon was downright obvious as Shipyard fans watched the fall brew sweep the Sweet 16 brackets, outscoring its opponent by triple digits in each round.

Knocking out two big-bodied beers in early contests, including "big brother" Smashed Pumpkin, Pumpkinhead went in to the Championship performance facing the proclaimed "beast of a beer" - Old Thumper.

The ever popular English bitter succumbed to the intense popularity of the refreshing autumn seasonal early on. Regardless of how the Championship played out, Shipyard is proud that so many of their brews are fan favorites. Cheers!

Shipyard brings its brew plus more to Winter Park

I was beginning to think I would never find a bar that didn't have a dancer's pole in this town again.

Then I visited the new Shipyard Emporium in Winter Park. There's no dancer's pole, but it has pretty much everything else — a demo kitchen with beer and wine dinners, a mug club at its bar, a deli, full-service open kitchen, a bakery and a market. It certainly is an emporium.

Located at the former Strollo's Cucino Due space on Fairbanks Avenue (right before you hit Park Avenue), the brewpub is spacious and has a New England vibe with its large windows, whitewashed walls and wooden beams, ceiling and bar top. It makes sense because the brewery is based in Portland, Maine. Inside and outside seating is available — or you can sit at the bar with room for 14 people.

I first stopped by during last month's grand opening. There were so many people — Shipyard's assistant general manager Mike Smith says there were around 2,000 — that I really didn't get a chance to check out the place. But Shipyard's new "Live Maine Mondays" seemed like a perfect reason to visit again.
It was.

Every Monday from 5-10 p.m., Shipyard Emporium offers a whole Maine lobster, new potatoes and corn for $18.95 and pints of Shipyard brew for $3 a pop. The house beers are usually $5 a pint, so it's a nice discount. I've seen Shipyard for slightly cheaper at other bars around town, but this is Winter Park so I'll throw them a bone. And the lobster, usually out of my price range, is one insane, messy and delicious deal.

But I'm not a food critic, so back to the beer.

There are 11 Shipyard Brewing Company varieties on draft (along with their root beer) and a limited bottle selection. My friends and I tried the Shipyard Wheat Ale, the Shipyard IPA and the Shipyard XXXX IPA (Pugsley's Signature Series) and all were refreshing with just the right bite on the IPAs and crispness in the Wheat.

But by far and away the winning beer at the table was Orlando brewer Ron Raike's featured brown ale. Because Shipyard Emporium is also a nano-brewery, the brown ale was brewed on-site in a 28-gallon brewing system. The ale had nutty notes and hints of coffee and was better than most of the other brown ales I've tried elsewhere.

Raike experiments with recipes and flavors, which results in beers you can't find anywhere else. These exclusive selections, which include that delicious brown ale, are $6 a glass, well worth the money.

The Emporium also hosts a Mug Club. For $50 you get a mug for a year and four extra ounces on each purchase. It also includes discounts on food, special happy-hour prices for members, a free T-shirt and a free meal on your birthday.

Six packs of Shipyard bottled beer are also available for purchase to go, as well as other national microbrews including Cigar City Brewing, Holy Mackerel and Left Hand Brewing.

And even though there is a rather large patio seating area wrapping around the outside of the Emporium, smokers beware. There is no smoking allowed inside or outside on the premises. Some folks in my party ended up walking to the parking lot next-door to light up. Inconvenient and I'm sure annoying to the neighbors (cigarette butts on the ground), but it is what it is.

Smith turned me (and many in this town) onto Shipyard when he was with Florida Micro Beverage doing its marketing and promotions. He plans on continuing those events in his new position. The Shipyard Beer Bomb Bus, Bike (and upcoming Boat and Balloon) Tours will continue along with beer dinners and more (see the sidebar about upcoming events). The Emporium will be the home base for all of Smith's fun ways of pushing Shipyard.

If the Emporium is as successful as those events have been in Orlando, it will be a Winter Park fixture for years to come — and I'll be eating whole lobsters a lot more, too.

Shipyard brings microbrewery back to Central Florida

WINTER PARK — Several years after shutting down in Orlando, Maine-based Shipyard Brewing Co. is launching a new microbrewery just down the street from a well-known Central Florida brewpub from the 1990s.

Shipyard Emporium is scheduled to open Friday at 6 p.m. at 200 W. Fairbanks Ave. in Winter Park, the former site of Dexter's and Strollo's Cucino Due.

Shipyard Emporium has a 28-gallon brewery and a market and bakery, where customers can order to-go or stick around to eat. The menu, featuring locally produced and grown ingredients, will change frequently based on what's available and in season.

Ron Raike, who used to work at the old Shipyard microbrewery in Orlando International Airport, will brew craft beers at the new place.

"Ron is an expert brewer and a very creative brewer," Shipyard spokeswoman Tami Kennedy said. "He's been a home brewer forever, and he just has that gift. It's almost like a chef with a real creative gift in being able to do these more experimental beers."

Along with Raike's creations, the emporium will sell Shipyard beers, as well as wine.

Raike said it doesn't make sense to focus on brewing Shipyard beers on-site because "the factory does a great job at consistency. Why should I brew that beer, when they can make it at the factory on a hundred-fold scale and we can ship it down and keep it fresh and consistent? The idea of this small system is to do something unique to the Winter Park-Orlando area."

Microbreweries were hot in Central Florida in the 1990s. The Mill opened in Winter Park in 1990 close to Shipyard's new spot and became a popular hangout. It eventually opened in other places around town, too.

Shipyard entered the Central Florida market in 1997 with what it said was the world's first airport microbrewery.

Big River Grille and Brewing Works at Disney's BoardWalk opened in the mid-1990s as well. It is still around, but the Mill closed, as did the OIA Shipyard brewery. Rent became more expensive, and it was too difficult to operate in an airport, Kennedy said.

"The brewpubs were really in their heyday in the early '90s," said Dennis Lombardi, a restaurant consultant with Ohio-based WD Partners. "But there's still a very definitive group of customers that really like crafted beers and will seek out their favorites or will be more interested in trying a craft beer as opposed to a mass-market beer."

Grand opening of the Shipyard Emporium to be held Friday, January 28

WINTER PARK, FLORIDA (January 17, 2011) – The grand opening of the new Shipyard Emporium will be held Friday, January 28 from 6:00pm – 10:00pm. The Shipyard Emporium is located at 200 West Fairbanks Avenue (the former site of Strollo’s Cucino Due) in Winter Park, Florida.

The Emporium is a local market, bakery, and brew pub featuring a rotating selection of self-serve breakfast, lunch and dinner food items to take-away or eat-in.

“The grand opening will give customers the opportunity to meet local vendors, sample a variety of our food and beverage offerings, and check out everything our fresh marketplace has to offer,” noted general manager Allison Stevens.

The Shipyard Emporium features fine wine, hand crafted local beer, and award-winning ales and Capt’n Eli’s Soda from the Shipyard Brewing Company in Portland, Maine.

The kitchen will be overseen by Chef Joslyn Tusa and food offerings will include a revolving selection of deli items, fresh baked bread and pastries, local produce, eggs, cheeses, specialty foods and self-serve meal selections for the whole family.

The Emporium is home to a 28 gallon brewing system and beer will be brewed on the premises by accomplished Orlando brewer Ron Raike. Raike will brew small batches of seasonal and unique beers based on his own creativity and ingredient availability. During the opening celebration, customers will have the opportunity to meet Raike, learn more about the brewing process, and join the mug club.

The evening festivities will include an interactive photo booth, entertainment, and the chance to meet the Shipyard Emporium crew. In addition, thirty visitors from Maine will be in attendance including Shipyard Brewing Company’s owner, Fred Forsley.

More about Ron Raike: Raike is a native of Orlando, Florida. He has worked with Shipyard Brewing Company for over 13 years as a brewer and Florida brewery representative. He started brewing over 20 years ago while working on his Masters in Engineering at the University of Central Florida. He is a credentialed beer judge (through the Beer Judge Certification Program) and is a certified Cicerone. He is also a two time Southeast Homebrewer of the Year winner and has been awarded many National Homebrew Competition medals. He is an active member of the Central Florida Home Brewers and has served on the board of the Florida Brewers Guild.

More about Allison Stevens: Stevens is the general manager and creative director of the Shipyard Emporium. She grew up in her family-owned business in Northern New York and graduated from the College of Charleston, South Carolina in 2003. At a young age, she managed her own sandwich shop before becoming an event planner and managing the prestigious Syracuse Invitational Sporthorse Tournament, the largest not-for-profit annual fundraiser in Central New York.

PORTLAND, MAINE – (January 10, 2011) – Shipyard Brewing Company announces the release of Double Old Thumper. This new beer is available year-round in 22 oz. bottles and on draft.

Double Old Thumper is the big brother of the British Grand Champion beer Old Thumper Extra Special Ale, which was created in 1979 by veteran British brewer, Peter Austin, founder of the Ringwood Brewery in Hampshire, England, and brewed in the United States solely by Shipyard. Shipyard’s Master Brewer Alan Pugsley trained at the Ringwood Brewery before moving to the United States 25 years ago.

Double Old Thumper was created by Pugsley and has 11.2% alcohol by volume. “Despite its strength, this beer is a great example of balance between malt and hops lending to a surprising drinkability,” noted Pugsley.

Double Old Thumper has a brilliant deep copper hue and spicy hop aroma with a complex malty finish featuring a dry Simcoe Hop bite. This beer pairs well with short ribs, lamb, hearty stews, and casseroles.

When Pugsley was brewing Old Thumper at Ringwood Brewery in the 1980s it was considered a very strong ale and, by English standards, it still is.

“When we started brewing Old Thumper under license at Shipyard in 1994 it was considered strong in the United States too,” Pugsley continued. “Double Old Thumper is literally twice the strength, twice the grist, and twice the hops of Old Thumper and, today, is considered strong and Old Thumper is just of average drinking strength. It’s a funny old world!”

In homage to Old Thumper, the package features an illustration of two of the famous Ringwood boars heads.

Well known blogger Tom Bedell has a running post titled, "Tap Beer Of The Week".

Week 42 is dedicated to Smashed Pumpkin Ale. As many reviewers have done in the past, Blodell compares and contrasts "The Smashed", to the brewery's better known Pumpkinhead Ale. Eventually though he correctly points out that "Smashed" can, and does stand on its own merits.
He writes,"Smashed Pumpkin is a more sophisticated and heady beer in various ways, not only in its increased strength, although that is a major factor, making it a sipping beer that would be welcome at the dinner table".

Purists might want to skip this one, but pumpkin ales and lagers are becoming a fall staple, and the "other" Portland's Shipyard has a winner with its Smashed Pumpkin, from the brewer's Pugsley's Signature Series. It's a clear copper pour with a frothy light-tan head and a nose that's malty and not quite as spicy as some other pumpkin brews. Nutmeg, allspice and cinnamon are light but noticeable. On the palate, it's surprisingly balanced, with Light Munich malt upfront, followed by the pumpkin flavor and spices, and finishing with Hallertau and Willamette hops. The creamy mouthfeel is a plus too. Enjoy it with hearty seasonal dishes such as beef stew or, naturally, pumpkin pie (or in lieu of same). Maine vacationers are invited to roll up their sleeves and learn to brew with professional brewers at the Kennebunkport Brewing Company (KBC), where the award-winning Shipyard Brewing Company first began at Federal Jack’s Restaurant and Brew Pub. This intimate three-day educational vacation will give guests the opportunity to experience a day in the life of a brewer, ask questions, and get hands-on in the brewing process. It’s the perfect fit for craft beer enthusiasts, people who want to learn more about techniques and ingredients to help improve their own home brewed beer, or be inspired to home brew for the first time.

Day 1: Arrive in Kennebunk for a special reception and dinner at Federal Jack’s

Day 2: 7:00am – 3:30pm Brew at Kennebunkport Brewing Company. Lunch will be served at Federal Jack’s. Guests are free to enjoy exploring the area in the evening.

Day 3: 10:30am Behind the scenes tour of Shipyard Brewing Company followed by lunch at Sea Dog Brewing Company in South Portland.

Improv Asylum hosts Boston's first improv comedy beer festival

On Saturday, October 9th from 12pm to 6pm Improv Asylum will host Boston’s first improv and sketch comedy beer festival called LAFFENHAUS. For $40 (online in advance and $50 after October 7th.) beer drinkers and comedy lovers can come to the historic North End and combine two of the world’s greatest creations in one place. LAFFENHAUS will comprise of two 3-hour long sessions starting at 12pm and at 3pm. Guests who are 21+ will have a chance to taste beer from local brewers for the first hour and be given a comedic break produced and performed by the lightening quick actors of Improv Asylum during the second hour immediately followed by another hour of tasting. Among the local brewers participating are Sam Adams, Narragansett, Long Trail, and Shipyard Brewing Company.

Trail to Ale 10K

Portland Trails' Trail to Ale 10K was a great success! Nearly 1,500 runners turned out to race and raise money for this incredible organization.

The Shipyard Brewing Company crew was on hand serving refreshments to the runners and Portland Pie donated pizza for the event.

5th Annual Hike the River kicks off Pumpkinhead Festival

5th Annual Hike the River will benefit Maine Cancer Foundation as part of Pumpkinhead Festival weekend at the Phoenix House & Well

NEWRY, MAINE (September 1, 2010) – The Phoenix House & Well, Sunday River, and Shipyard Brewing Company have partnered together to sponsor the 5th Annual Hike the River. This two mile hike will be held Saturday, October 30 at 11:00 a.m. and 100% of funds raised will go to the Maine Cancer Foundation in support of breast cancer research, education, and patient support programs in Maine.

The hike will begin at the Phoenix House & Well on Skiway Rd. in Newry and travel up some of Sunday River’s most beautiful trails. Registration starts at 10:00 a.m. and the entry fee is $25. A brunch featuring eggs Benedict, stuffed French toast and more will be offered free to hike participants starting at 9:00 a.m. The registration form can be downloaded at this link.

Hike the River is part of Pumpkinhead Festival weekend at the Phoenix. Weekend entertainment will include:

A performance by comedienne Karen Morgan on Friday, October 29 at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 with a special rate of $10 for registered hike participants.

Maine’s favorite cover band, Monsta, will rock the Phoenix on Saturday, October 30 at 9:00 p.m. and there will be prizes for the best Halloween costume. Tickets are $10 and this event is free for hike participants. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Maine Cancer Foundation.

My roommates and I discovered a great way to enjoy Pumpkinhead Ale while transitioning from Summer to Fall on these hot days.

Pour yourself a tall glass of cold Pumkinhead Ale and then drop in a large scoop of vanilla ice cream. It foams up nicely and is very creamy and satisfying! Everyone who tries it loves it. I thought I should let you know so that you can tell the world.

I'm surprised none of the local bars are marketing this yummy treat!
We've been inviting all our friends over to the house to try it.
