Brewmaster Alan Pugsley featured in May issue of Down East Magazine

Shipyard Brewing Company's brewmaster, Alan Pugsley, is featured in the latest issue of Down East Magazine.

The article, entitled "It's About the Beer," examines the major influence that Pugsley has had not only on Maine beer but on beers across the country:

"Among the beer cognoscenti, however, Pugsley’s reputation verges on the legendary. 'My former partner called him the Johnny Appleseed of craft beer,' says Bob Johnson. Now an owner of South Portland’s Scratch Baking Co., Johnson co-founded Magic Hat Brewing in Burlington, Vermont, in 1993. 'Brewing is an almost magical mix of hands-on physical labor, art, and science. When they all come together, at the end of the day, you’ve got this beautiful glass of beer — and Alan Pugsley is the one who brought that aesthetic to New England.'"

The Shipyard Brewing Company was founded by master brewer Alan Pugsley and entrepreneur Fred Forsley. Shipyard first began in 1992 at Federal Jack's Restaurant and Brew Pub in Kennebunk, which is one of Maine's original brew pubs and working breweries. Within two years, demand for Shipyard beer outpaced the small operation and, in April 1994, Forsley and Pugsley opened the Shipyard Brewing Company in the heart of the waterfront in Portland, Maine on the site of the former Crosby Laughlin Foundry.

Bill "The Beer Guy" Milliken - Maine Beer to President Obama

View photos at this link.
Read Ray Routhier's story about the press conference at this link.

Maine Brewers’ Guild members gathered this morning at the Public Market House in Portland to celebrate a gift basket of Maine beer being headed to the White House.

Bill Milliken, owner of Maine Beer and Beverage Company, was mentioned in President Barack Obama's speech during his visit to Maine earlier this month. Obama highlighted Bill as an example of a small business owner who will benefit from federal health care reform. Milliken owns Maine Beer and Beverage and Market House Coffee, both located in the Public Market House.

During his speech, the President jokingly asked Milliken to send him some samples of Maine beer and stated Bill “nodded in the affirmative” that he would. Today, Maine Beer and Beverage Company, the Maine Small Business Coalition and the Maine Brewers’ Guild fulfilled that promise.

This historic occasion was marked by speeches by Maine Governor John Baldacci, Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, Portland Mayor Nick Mavodones, and Bill “The Beer Guy” Milliken.

Maine beer headed to the White House in the gift basket includes:
Allagash Brewing - Curieux; Andrew’s Brewing - English Pale Ale; D.L. Geary Brewing - Pale Ale and Hampshire Special Ale; Gritty McDuff’s - Red Claws Ale; Maine Beer Co. - Spring Peeper Ale; Marshall Wharf Brewing - Illegal Ale-Len and Cant Dog IPA;
Oak Pond Brewing - Laughing Loon Lager and White Fox Ale; Sea Dog Brewing - Sea Dog Bluepaw Wild Blueberry Wheat Ale; Sebago Brewing - Single Batch Series Milestone Ale;
